I, Tejal Shah, would like to make a complaint against Barclays Bank Plc. I have a credit card with them. This complaint is a result of unacceptable service that I have received from them since the time I first got credit card with them, viz, since the year 2008.
The first time a written complaint was made by me, was in May 2008. Reason being as follows:
I had missed making a payment for Rs. 4,100 in April 2008. I got a call from their collections team executive, who shortly after speaking to me send me a text message on my mobile from his personal mobile number asking me to befriend him (he said his name was Sunny and his mobile number was 9970581549). I refused and he came back strongly threatening me.
This was reported to Customer care unit of the Barclays immediately (name of executive I spoke to was Hiren Sagar) and he said they will look into the matter and I will get a callback within 24/48 hours, which wasn’t done. As Sunny hadn’t arranged for anyone to be sent to collect payment, I did the same. I paid Rs. 1100 in cash and drew chq of Citibank for Rs 3,000 which was handed over to Mr B Shankar on the 29/04/2008 (he said he is from third party that collects money on behalf of Barclays). He was from a company called RMS Credit solutions Pvt Ltd, Juhu Tara Rd, Juhu, Mumbai: 400049. Their telephone number was mentioned as : 022-26605684/85.
After reporting the matter, Sunny started harassing me and my family by calling on my mobile and home telephone number from Barclays collections telephone number for more than 20-30 times a day with other names such as Raj and Amrish. He threatened my mother stating he will send police if I did not make payments, even after she gave the receipt number and said that the payments were made.
My mother being a BP patient was traumatized and faced undue stress due to continuous harassment by the collections team of Barclays.
Even though this was a serious situation, Barclays failed on all counts to get back to me and get this matter resolved on a priority based even though it was promised by various customer care executives who I kept calling up to follow up on their intentions regarding how to resolve complaints and when will compensation for undue stress paid to me? I had asked for compensation due to undue stress caused to my family and myself as a result of their employee’s actions which were not justified. I made a complaint to the police as well in May 2008. This was a complaint made by me and letter with all details was given at the Chirag Nagar Police station, Ghatkopar west, Mumbai - 400086.
After delaying the matter for more than 10 months, once I ceased making payments after sending e-mails to the CEO of Barclays bank, speaking to various officers like Mr Jignesh Bhatt and Mr Nilesh Fernandes, I was finally given a waiver on o/s amount on my card and was given some vouchers of Shopper Stop.
Shortly after this, I received a call from an executive of Barclays bank, who stated that to help me pay off my o/s amount they can place a block on this card and reduce the interest rates charges on it. At this stage, it was NOT informed that the card cannot be unblocked again and that it will be terminated the day I pay o/s amount in full if its after 6 months from the date card is blocked. I don’t understand that for no fault of mine how can they terminate the card and why did I never receive any apology letter or any confirmation, neither of complaint being resolved or being looked into, nor of resolution they provided, nor of this arrangement to help me payoff balance in full? I would like to add that in the month of February 2010, when I had some spare cash, I had decided to payoff my balance in full. It was only then that I was informed that the card will be terminated. I made complaint in March 2010 and till date 29th May 2010, I haven’t received the callback that was promised nor was any letter sent again acknowledging this complaint.
At this stage I am looking for help from The RBI, on this matter. Kindly let me know the next step of how can we arrange for this ongoing issue to be resolved?
Eagerly awaiting your reply.
